Bangladeshism:Influenced by Modernization and Dependency Theory
This/The
land is 147,570 km² and surrounded by India from
all three sides. After the decline of the Mughal Empire in the 1700s. Bengal
became a semi-independent state under the Nawabs of Bengal, after which it was
conquered by the British East India Company at the Battle of
Plassey in 1757, directly contributing to
the Industrial Revolution in Britain and
to deindustrialization in
Bengal. The Bengali city of Calcutta served as the capital city of British India up until the
early 20th century. Later after the British rule the land was named East
Pakistan and they gained independence in 1971 and was named Bangladesh. Bangladesh is considered to be a Third World
country and the etymology of the term ‘third world’ is quite interesting. It
was coined by a French economist and demographer named Alfred Sauvy, who
considered these developing countries in South Asia, Latin America and Africa
to be like the Third Estate in France. Bangladesh is one of the poorest and
densely populated countries in the world.
Recent Bangladesh as of now is an ‘Under developed country’ and is striving to become one of the developed countries. Under the modernization theory i.e a deveplopment and transition from a 'traditional' to 'modern' society. Bangladesh has dropped its poverty incidence from 60% to 30%. Gender parity has been achieved in primary and secondary school enrollment. Although the improvement in Bangladesh’s growth rate since 1990 is impressive, it does not fully explain the country’s extraordinary results with regard to social development. In order to strive as a developed country Bangladesh has to make the poor wealthy. Several other countries in South and Southeast Asia have grown at similar or higher rates than Bangladesh in the last 10 to 15 years, including India, Bhutan, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Yet, in comparison to these countries, Bangladesh’s social development still stands out. In order to be modern Bangladesh has to cope up with the latest opportunities, technologies and good and services through globalization.
Under the dependency theory Bangladesh has to keep alliance with other countries through export and import of its major exports Machinery and equipment, Chemicals, Iron and steel, Textiles, Foodstuffs, Petroleum products, Cement as it would improve Bangladesh’s GDP income. In order to become a developed country Bangladesh has to bring in wealth and resources from other country. Improve current capitalism in the business market. This flow would have an impact on the culture and ethics of the society but it wouldn’t be a much of a threat as Bangladesh itself have its strong implementation of its own culture.
There is no such thing as already developed country as the country Bangladesh has to keep improving every day to be better than yesterday.
